Background of the Study
Poor waste management is a critical environmental and public health issue, particularly in urban areas. In Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Rivers State, inadequate waste disposal practices have led to environmental degradation and the proliferation of disease vectors. Accumulated waste in residential areas creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and rodents, contributing to illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and leptospirosis (Uche, 2023). Furthermore, improper waste management results in air and water pollution, adversely affecting respiratory and overall health (Ade, 2024). This study investigates the extent to which poor waste management impacts public health by examining the correlation between disposal practices, environmental quality, and disease prevalence. Recent research underscores the importance of sustainable waste management in preventing disease outbreaks and improving quality of life (Okafor, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Asari-Toru, poor waste management has emerged as a significant public health concern, yet its direct effects on disease prevalence remain inadequately quantified (Chukwu, 2023). The absence of efficient waste disposal systems and public awareness contributes to environmental degradation and increased health risks. This study seeks to identify the link between inadequate waste management practices and adverse public health outcomes, providing data to support effective policy and community interventions (Okeke, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the current waste management practices in Asari-Toru.
To evaluate the impact of these practices on public health.
To recommend interventions for improving waste management and reducing health risks.
Research Questions:
What are the prevalent waste management practices in Asari-Toru?
How does poor waste management affect public health in the area?
What measures can effectively improve waste management and health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses:
Inadequate waste management is significantly correlated with increased disease prevalence.
Poor waste disposal practices lead to environmental pollution that adversely affects public health.
Implementing improved waste management systems will reduce health risks in the community.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the direct impact of poor waste management on public health. The findings will inform policymakers and community leaders on effective waste management strategies, ultimately aiming to reduce disease prevalence and improve environmental quality in Asari-Toru (Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Waste management: The collection, treatment, and disposal of waste materials.
Public health: The overall health and well-being of the general population.
Environmental pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the environment that adversely affect health.
